Meet the Fellows:
Fiction and Non-Fiction Editor, Jessica Leeth Young is an alumni of Community Overcoming Recidivism through Education (CORE) at Pasadena City College. Her experience as an incarcerated juvenile drives her passion for change, and she strongly believes that words have the power to heal. Before transferring to Chico State, Jessica served as a Community Engagement Leader for CORE and was part of the first ever Inscape x Healing Arts in 2022 as the Prose Editor. Currently, she has engaged in panels for students in K-12 Education, leads writing circles, and will also be a teacher's assistant in the fall of 2023 at Pasadena City College under her mentor Dr. Ogden. Jessica loves the community she comes from and believes people could change when given the right opportunity.
Visual Art Editor, Ángela Gonzales-Torres (Angie) is a Northeast LA native, daughter of a deportee, and one of four girls raised by a single mother. Her research at UCLA includes Chicana and Central American studies and Anthropology; she aims to pursue law school next. She is passionate about opportunities to support formerly incarcerated and system-impacted individuals, like herself, in pursuit of higher education, healing, and justice. So, to be part of Pasadena City College’s CORE (Community Overcoming Recidivism through Education) community as a PCC alum and coordinator for the 2023 Inscape x Healing Arts chapbook brings her joy.
Outreach Coordinator, Tristin Fowler grew up in Austin, Texas, and has been in California for roughly seven years. He is a History major and primarily conducts research that focuses on the prison industrial complex and analyzing how students of color are filtered into the criminal justice system through education. He is passionate about student pathways and wants to be a bridge point for system-impacted and formerly incarcerated individuals, helping them achieve their academic aspirations. Being a Pasadena City College alum and working closely with the CORE community provides him immense fulfillment while aiding in the process of changing narratives.
Outreach Coordinator, Khale’ Jackson is a California native who resides in Valencia. Khale’ is a Sophomore at the University of California, Los Angeles studying in the field of Political Science. His focus in the political science department is on Race, ethnicity, and politics. His current goals after college is to receive a Masters in Public Policy and focus on research that is directed towards how Public Policy affects the African American and Latinx communities. Additionally, Khale’ plans on attending Law School to receive his JD in the area of Employment law. After practicing law, his goal is to work on Public Policy that focuses on education, nonprofit organizations, and advancing Urban communities. As a student at UCLA Khale’ is a part of the California For All College Corps program. As a college Corps Fellow, he works with CORE by teaching High School students about the carceral system and how the carceral system affects the black and brown communities, along with mentoring CORE students. His interest is to encourage and uplift students at CORE and John Muir High school.
Managing Editor and Event Curator, Jasmin Lopez grew up in Los Angeles on traditional Tongva, Gabrielino, and Kizh homelands. Currently a student of Anthropology and Chicanx/Latin American Studies at UCLA. As a Pasadena City College transfer student, it is important for her to give back to the community that first gave her faith in the power of education. PCC allowed for her to embrace her untraditional identities as a high school push-out and system-impacted student. This has aided her inspiration towards creating spaces of liberation for historically marginalized students and curated the Healing Arts initiative in 2022.
